BOOKS

Jim Zumwalt has written three published books over the years.  In order of the publication date, they are Bare Feet-Iron Will (2010), Doomsday: Iran (2012) and Living the Juche Lie (2012).  Each is a window into what amounts to three very different worlds.  What they have in common is the same steady and meticulous focus of the author.  He "marches to the sound of facts" and deploys them.
Three other books have appeared over the years that explain and illuminate the remarkable career of Admiral Zumwalt and the impact of what he guided into being as Chief of Naval Operations from 1970-'74.  He wrote On Watch himself in 1976.  Zumwalt: The Life and Times (2012) and My Father, My Son (1986) were the others.  The story of father and son is an unsparingly poignant tale.
In the pages of On Watch, the Admiral's own words capture how his experience (pre-1970) locked in the combination of beliefs and resolve that would drive his efforts as CNO to rebuild and revamp the Navy.  Zumwalt assuredly did give both shape and force to making the institution of the Navy more "modern" and more "human" but he was hardly alone.  On Watch makes that very clear.
