WELCOME

FAITH. HONOR. TRUTH. They have been the guiding lights of the Zumwalts for over 200 years tracing back to before the first tremor of revolution in America. As a Naval leader in war and peace, my father took Edmund Burke to heart: "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." To my father, giving in to evil was never an option.
I'm very blessed to bear the Zumwalt name and to have served in both the Navy and Marine Corps.  But serving the country is what we do.  To serve is a deep calling for all the millions of us who know so well the crucial and never-ending truth that freedom is never free.  We must defend it.  I offer here my views on how and why America has been "under siege."

Admiral Elmo Zumwalt USN (documentary)

THIS WEBSITE: ITS PURPOSE
Our country has been under siege by the social and political Left since the early 1960s.  Each year since then we seem to be edging ever closer to a fateful tipping point, a point of No Return where the Left will neuter dissent, then roll ahead to inflict its vision of a more perfect union.  That "more perfect union" is a dictatorship of Virtue.  See France, 1789.
In short, the vision of the Left is the vision of Karl Marx, of an all-powerful state that towers above and rules over a bullied population of human cogs (from cradle to grave) by the Holy Writ of Freedom, Equality, and Fairness.  They are non sequiturs; each cancels the others.  But Leftists fear revelations of facts and truth as much as vampires fear the sun.

The purpose of this website is to honor my parents, my son and my brother, my fellow Marines and Sailors, all those who served then and serve now, and to make accessible much of my written work and other continuing efforts.  My aim is to measure up to what generations of my family have sought (with such bold and unwavering zeal) to give to our nation.
We Americans will soon face an existential choice with regard to a further step down the sloping path leading to communism or a resurrection of the core values on which our nation was founded.  How have we been so remiss to allow America to sink (over 50-plus years) to a point where the fanaticized Far Left has gained control of the Democratic Party?

Note: an all-powerful state is a giant incubator of Evil effects no matter how benign or desirable its aims and goals might seem.  But the outcome will always be what it always is, a grinding creep of subjugation and squalor.  Yet, half the electorate buys into the lethal absurdities ginned up by the Left that imply a Garden of Eden 2.0 is somehow in the offing.

To defeat the predatory crusade of the Left to melt down America into a hive of warring factions, we need to rejuvenate the core values that Leftists have all but buried.  They aim to erase the Family, Manhood, Citizenship, and Freedom.  Today's Left burns with the same deadly mix of hatreds as did the Jacobins in 1789.  We must stand, fight, and repel them.
THIS WEBSITE: ITS CONTENT AND ITS DESIGN
The contents of this website are rooted in the experience of my life within and beyond the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the military in general.  I was raised by loving and dedicated parents as one of four siblings.  We were schooled in the obligations of each of us to each of us.  We were schooled in citizenship within and, thus, beyond our family.  We were loved.

The design of this website is rooted in my family's experience as well as my own and my brother's college time at the University of North Carolina.  That's why "Carolina Blue" appears here.  My brother and I were Naval ROTC in Chapel Hill and our dad headed up the NROTC unit there for a few years.  We have a lot of great family recollections of Chapel Hill and UNC.
VIETNAM VETS WHO DIED FROM THE EFFECTS OF AGENT ORANGE

My older brother, Elmo III, died in 1988 from a cancer that was traced back to his exposure to Agent Orange as a Navy swift-boat CO in Vietnam.  My father, as Chief of Naval Operations at the time, had given the order to use Agent Orange to prevent the Viet Cong from killing so many swift-boat sailors.  It worked.  No one then had a clue about the long-term effects.
My father, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt II, was devastated by how lethal Agent Orange was proving to be years later for those susceptible to it.  My brother was one of those.  As a result, my father and our family came early to the developing effort to deal with the after-effects of Agent Orange.  The story of our long journey facing this tragedy is well told in My Father, My Son.

Plaque at Vietnam Memorial; Washington, DC

There is a superb website that  honors and recalls those who served in Vietnam and later died (so often many years later) as a result of their service.  The site is Agent Orange Zone and I believe you will be deeply touched by how our brothers and sisters are memorialized there.  Note: the site offers hundreds of photos of those now passed but yet remain with us.
